TOP children’s television presenter, Lizzie Botham, better known to the young viewers of the CBeebies channel as “Bizi Lizi” from the “Smarteenies” programme, will be at Barrowford Show to hand out prizes to exhibitors in the children’s section.
Lizi is now Clitheroe-based, from where she runs children’s parties which have art and craft activities and she plans to set up a children’s centre along the same lines in the town.
Mrs Deb Westwell, in charge of the children’s section, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that she has agreed to come and present the prizes.”
One of the country’s top dahlia experts, grower David Clamp of Nelson, will be on hand in the horticultural tent to talk about his favourite flower. Mr Clamp is one man who started showing dahlias at local level and over the past ten years has come to national and international prominence. He will have some of his prize-winning blooms on show.
The brand new banners for the show went on display at the latest committee meeting, which gave members a chance to express their thanks to Colne financial advisor Chris Burt for his generosity in providing them.
Mr Burt came up with the offer to buy the banners because he has always been interested in the village show and in the past exhibited in the horticultural section.
The committee was also pleased that Dyson’s Arts, of Barrowford, have sponsored the children’s pets tent. The duck race is now scheduled for 2-30 p.m.
As well as the sheep shearing and sheep racing, which was included in last week’s report on the progress of the show, the Pendle Young Farmers will also stage a “Milk the cow” competition.
Mrs Margaret Farnworth and friends are organising the children’s races, which will include a flat race, egg and spoon, potato race, skipping and one for parents. The children’s races are split into four sections - under-5s, primary, junior and senior children. Prizes will be £1·50 for first place, £1 for second and 50p for third. Thanks to an anonymous donation, Mrs Farnworth has been given £50 for prize money. Someone also donated two bottles of wine for the children’s races! Committee members decided that they might be better in the adult raffle.
In the horse section, Mrs Grace Barnes says that the number of Shetland ponies being entered this year has increased substantially.
Vice-president’s tickets are now on sale at £27·50, which includes the entrance price, a splendid meal in the president’s tent, accompanying drinks and a ringside view of all the best entertainment.
Nelson Leader - Friday 11th August
THERE is a musical feast for visitors to this year’s Barrowford Show, who will be entertained by Nelson Brass Band, the Salvation Army Band and Supreme Jazz, those wonderful strolling jazz players who popped up all over the showground last year.
There will be two sessions each from the two bands and the jazz musicians will play throughout the day.
Nelson Brass Band will be in the memorial garden at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., while the Salvation Army’s stirring music can be heard on Bull Holme at noon and 2 p.m.
Interestingly, Mr Iain Lord, clerk to Barrowford Parish Council, says music was at the heart of the show’s early days, evolving out of a brass band contest.
Show chairman Natalie Cox is praying for a continuation of the glorious weather we have been enjoying, perhaps not as hot as it has been on some days in July but a fine, sunny day with a nice breeze would go down well.
“I don’t want any rain in the morning as we have had in the past two years - it puts people off. It does not matter how hard the committee works, what kind of events we put on, if it rains in the morning people arrange to go elsewhere. It is a sad but a true fact,” she said.
Advance tickets for the show, the 84th, are now being put in a variety of venues in the village. A family ticket, only available in advance, is £7.50 for two adults and two children, an adult £4, senior citizen £3.50 and child £1.50. Children of three and under go free. On the day, tickets rise to £4.50 for an adult, £4 senior citizen and £2.50 for children. It does not take much arithmetic to work out that a £7.50 family ticket bought in advance is nearly 50% cheaper than the individual tickets bought on the day.
New this year are the Barlick Wheelers, a chance to have a go on the climbing wall on Bull Holme which will be brought by Brierfield Army Cadets, and plenty of opportunity for the children to join in with the Fantasia Road Show. There will be sheep shearing demonstrations by the Pendle Young Farmers.
While young people are waiting for their exhibits to be judged there will be traditional children’s races. There will be racing of a different kind when the four-footers get in on the act. Those hilarious racing ferrets who proved remarkable entertainment last year, are back again thanks to Oasis Ferret Rescue, hopefully ithis time in a spot where they can be enjoyed by many more people. The young farmers are providing another race with a difference when they put the sheep under starter’s orders. complete with Teddy bear jockeys on their backs.
On the park there will be herding and obedience displays by Bill Heslop and his sheepdogs, cheerleaders from the Sanderson School of Dance, Black Knights’ kick boxers, Vale Royal falconry and a vintage car parade. The ducks have already arrived in Barrowford and will take to the water at £1 each and there will be the traditional tug-o’-war with Cath Collis-Tattersall in charge of the pub and club teams.
Most of all, there are the competition sections, with rosettes, trophies and honour all at stake in the horse, rabbit, dog, horticulture, confectionery and craft sections. Children have their own sections, including pets and rabbits. It is hoped that last year’s children’s horticulture, craft and confectionery exhibits are repeated this year, despite the schools being on holiday.
The young players of Barrowford Celtic FC will be in evidence on their pitches at the Wilton Street end of this gigantic showground. There will be trade stands, food stalls and charity stalls. The show, on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday, starts at 9 a.m.

“IT’S showtime again in Barrowford.
The village’s annual show goes ahead this year on the Sunday of the late summer Bank Holiday, August 27th.
This year it will be proclaimed in banners.
Thanks to a generous sponsor, the show committee has been able to purchase two 20ft banners, one of which, members hope, will be at the Newbridge end of the village and the other on Colne Road.
Advance tickets are now becoming available. Posters are going up and tickets can be bought from the Spar shop, Gifted, and Enigma, the computer shop.
Show manager Graham Midgley says his part of the job is progressing nicely. This year more attractions, including the highly successful children’s section will be brought onto the show field, instead of being stretched out more or less up to Park Hill.
And because there is evidence of people cheating in the past and getting into the show free by claiming they were allotment holders and needed to get to their holding, or were members of the bowling club, when they were not, the show committee has taken the step of issuing special tickets to the genuine people. Members of the bowling club, providing refreshments for match players from their tea bar, found themselves invaded last year because it was the only place where the public could get a cup of tea or coffee, a biscuit or a homemade cake.
Local charities need to make sure they book their stall, says Allan Vickerman.
Stalls work out around £2 a foot, usually £16 for the day and any charity wishing to book one can contact Mr Vickerman on 692338.”

“Show is a family affair!
Anyone who visited last year’s Barrowford Show will remember the sparkling and innovative diversity of the children’s exhibits, which were so numerous that they needed much more tent space to display them better.
For some the children’s section highlight of the 2005 show.
Hopefully, this year the display will at least equal last year’s, and perhaps be better still.
The big difference now is that local schools, which made such great contributions last year, will still be on holiday.
Mrs Deb Westwell, the show committee member and one of the team which organises the children’s section, said: “We have contacted the schools and we will be getting entries from at least one but the main message was to inform children and parents that entry forms will be available throughout Barrowford.
Everyone is hoping that families will not forget to enter because this time we have more classes.”
Two of the new classes are in the confectionery section. Children are asked to bake three scones and the groups are up to the age of five, six – nine years, and 11-16 years. The same age groups apply to the cake decoration class.
Mrs Westwell said: “Last year the judge, Mr Philip Bannister, said the quality of the baking was so high that it was a shame to judge the work of the four year olds alongside that of a teenager – so this year we have sub-divided these classes and to fund the changes Oddie’s, the bakery and confectionery business, has kindly offered to sponsor the classes.
“Mrs Margaret Farnworth has also approached us offering to sponsor a class just for pre-school children. Playgroups, toddler groups and individuals may enter this class and it can be any piece of work – painting, collage, model making, etc. so long as it is by a pre-school child.”
In the gardening classes, children will be able to enter up to four items they have grown themselves and plants, fruit and vegetables will all be eligible. Gardening judge, Brian Singleton pointed out last year that the use of artificial foliage and flowers in the miniature garden trays and artificial materials on the decorated fruit or vegetables in not allowed!
Although the schools will be shut, the youth group at Barrowford and some of the toddler and Sunday schools will still be functioning and Mrs Westwell said she hoped for their support.
Schedules will be distributed shortly and will be available from local shops, Pendle Heritage Centre and the library. Anyone who wants more information can contact Mrs Westwell on 604696.
Children wishing to take part must submit their entry form before Friday August 25th, and exhibits must be brought to the horticulture tent before 10-30 a.m. on the show day, Sunday, August 27th.
The show now has a website www.barrowford-show.co.uk to try and raise the profile
