Wanted: person with neat handwriting to help organise show
Help! Barrowford Show urgently needs a new secretary to take minutes and
do whatever is needed in the way of administration and paperwork.
Show chairman Mrs Natalie Cox said "The person need not have access
to a computer as I am willing to type out handwritten minutes and post
copies to the committee members. Clear handwriting would be nice."
If anyone can help out Mrs Cox and her team, she can be contacted via
the Barrowford Parish Council office at 55 Gisburn Road, or by telephoning
her on 696039.
Attractions like Sanderson cheerleaders, Barlick Wheelers, Black Knights
martial arts, Ferrer Rescue, a jazz band, a puppet show, and hawk and
falconry display have already been booked.
Mrs Cox said "We want to pack the show ground with entertainment."
Advanced tickets, saving families a fortune, will be available soon -
watch for the posters going up in Barrowford shops. A family ticket for
two adults, two children, will cost £7.50 in advance. On the the
day it will cost £9 for two adults, and £5 for two children.
The advance family ticket gives you a saving of £6.50. Adult tickets
are £4 in advance, and another 50p on the day. Senior citizens will
also save themselves 50p by booking in advance because it is £4
on the day, and children save £1 as tickets on show day are £2.50.
There will be bigger and better children's section and entry has been
widened to include ones from clubs and organisations in Barrowford.
A website is being set up and show schedules will be put online so that
people interested in entering the various sections can do so by downloading
the information. The website will include lots of information and pictures
about the show.
The show chairman has alos expressed her delight in the way in which
two of Pendle's major businesses have resced this year's event.
Mrs Cox said: "Again, we have to say how delighted we were that
Sheila and Tim Webber of Barnfield Construction and Jean and Howard Rigg
of Howard Rigg Properties came to our rescue to the tune of £5,000.
There would have been no show this year without their generous and very
timely intervention."

Heroic Cash Gestures Help to Save the Day
Two of Pendle's best known major property firms have agreed to back this
year's Barrowford Show to the tune of £5,000.
In doing so Mr Tim Webber and his wife Sheila, of Barnfield Construction
Ltd, and Mr Howard Rigg, of Howard Rigg Properties, have relived the show
committee of a kingsized headache by literally saving the day.
And Barrowford Parish Council has also weighed in by agreeing to guarantee
any losses this year up to a ceiling of £7,000.
Show Chairman Mrs Natalie Cox said: "Last year's wet weather on
show day spelled disaster for the event, leaving organisers facing an
enormous cash shortfall. With costs rising, the committee responsible
for putting on the show has to raise enough money to ensure that, if this
year's show goes ahead, all the bills can be paid.
"Now, thanks to the heroic efforts of the two companies and the
support of the parish council, things are looking much rosier for the
83rd show on August 28th. I am sure I speak for all the committee members
and residents of Barrowford in offering our gratitude to those who have
come forward to help us financially.
"Barrowford show is a tradition. It is run for the community by
members of the community who all give their time voluntarily to plan,
organise and co-ordinate what is not only a fantastic day out, but a village
institution."
The chairman of the parish council, coun. Michael Simpson, said: "It
is vital that Barrowford Show goes ahead this year and the next. It is
part and parcel of village life and we know its revenue is dependant on
the weather. Last year's weather was responsible for turning a healthy
bank balance into a hefty loss. All we can do is pray for better weather
this year.
"The parish council is willing to guarantee any losses the show
might sustain up to a ceiling of £7,000, but we have told members
of the show committee to remember that this money belongs to the people
of Barrowford and is a significant portion of our working capital."
The SOS for financial help went out first of all to Barnfield Construction
with the plea that the show committee needed an initial £5,000,
otherwise after 82 shows there would not be one this year. An immediate
response came back from Mrs Sheila Webber offering half the money. Within
24 hours she made contact again with the message that Mr Rigg and his
firm, Howard Rigg Properties, would put up the other half.
The person who made the initial plea said: "I was speechless, thrilled
and quite flabbergasted by their immediate generosity, there was no hesitation.
Many thanks to them."
Several fund raising ventures are now being worked on, including a sponsored
programme which will be sold in advance of the day, promoting the event
and Barrowford as a village.
Ian Fraser is co-ordinating this new venture and is hoping to secure
the support of many village businesses, which may be willing to take our
advertisements in the brochure.
Anyone interested in getting involved can contact him by telephoning

Dilemma Over Rescue Talks for the Show
Barrowford's parish clerk has to consult the rule book to see whether
three members of Barrowford Parish Council and borough councillor Tony
Beckett will have to "leave the room" when the matter of a rescue
package for this year's Barrowford Show is discussed.
The matter came up at the latest meeting when parish councillors were
informed that the show was starting with a £5,000 deficit this year
and unless this could be plugged there would be no 83rd show in August.
Normally, if a councillor has a vested interest in an item, he or she
has to retire while discussions and voting take place. But to remove four
members, including chairman Michael Simpson, would knock out a third of
the vote.
The parish councillors are on the show committee in a voluntary capacity
and coun. Beckett as a representative of Pendle Council.

Agricultural Show Needs £5,000 before April to go Ahead
The committee running Barrowford Show has to find £5,000 before
the end of April to guarantee this year's show can go ahead.
Show chairman Mrs Natalie Cox and her committee members are not mincing
their words, no money, no show.
Heavy rain and wind on the morning of last year's show put people off
coming in the afternoon, by which time the weather had changed for the
better but the ground was left muddy underfoot. It meant that financially
the show was a washout.
Mrs Cox said: "Barrowford Show is a traditional, decades old event.
We are hoping to raise enough money to enable us to stage the 83rd show
this year.
"Wet weather last year meant the number of visitors who attended
the show was well down on previous years and coupled with the lack of
major sponsorship this left a big cash shortfall and the committee facing
some tough decisions. In order to ensure the future of Barrowford Show
2005, the committee must secure at least £5,000 before the end of
April and it is doing all it can to try and raise the cash needed to secure
the future of this traditional village event."
A number of grant applications have been submitted and the committee
is also pursuing some different money making initiatives.
Mrs Cox is well aware of the show's financial predicament. She appealed
to villagers to really get behind the show and help the committee save
this traditional event.
She said: "Barrowforders have always supported their village show.
Now we need the support of the villagers and people from across Pendle
even more than ever to make sure this year's show does go ahead. It is
perhaps difficult for people to appreciate how much it cost to stage the
show each year. One wet day, like we had in 2004, not only puts a damper
on the entertainment it also puts a huge dint in our funds".
The committee will meet again on April 28th to finalise the show's financial
position and decide whether it can go ahead.
The show now has a website www.barrowford-show.co.uk to try and raise
the profile.
